Introducing the Ngaarlu
Water has always shaped the Australian landscape.
On Gumbaynggirr Country, water flows through creeks and rivers, gathers in rock pools, falls as rain and eventually finds its way to the sea. Ngaarlu is the Gumbaynggirr word for water — a word that encompasses all of these forms.
This one-of-a-kind Fuko shaving brush was inspired by that movement.
At its heart is a piece of Australian Mallee burl, naturally formed over many years. A deep channel runs through the timber from one side to the other. Within it, a small flower rests beneath translucent blue-green epoxy, creating the impression of water flowing through the wood.
The burl represents the land.
The flowing resin represents water.
And the small flowers brings life to the place where they meet.
The result is a handle that feels less like something manufactured and more like a small piece of landscape — earth, water and life captured together.
Each Fuko brush is shaped and finished by hand in Emerald Beach, on Gumbaynggirr Country. The natural character of the burl means that every handle is different, while the flowing epoxy makes each piece impossible to reproduce exactly.
Ngaarlu is not simply a shaving brush.
It is a daily object inspired by the relationship between Country, water and time.
